How Telia, Boliden, and Partners are Transforming Mining with Private 5G Networks

In the rugged terrains of Sweden and Finland, mining giant Boliden is setting a benchmark in innovation by integrating cutting-edge private 5G networks into its operations. Partnering with Telia, Ericsson, and Edzcom (now Boldyn), Boliden is enhancing safety, efficiency, and sustainability across its mining sites.

A Journey Toward Connected Mines

Boliden’s Kankberg mine in Sweden became the world’s first underground mine to deploy a 5G network with New Radio (NR) technology. This collaboration with Telia and Ericsson is part of the NorthStar 5G innovation program, aimed at leveraging advanced 5G features like network slicing, edge computing, and ultra-precise positioning. These technologies are critical for operating autonomous vehicles and machinery in challenging underground environments, where accuracy and reliability can be life-saving.

The deployment at Kankberg also ties into Boliden’s broader goals of modernizing its digital infrastructure. The mine’s existing private 5G network is now being expanded and connected to the NorthStar innovation platform, allowing Boliden to explore new automation and sustainability solutions.

Extending the Network to Finland’s Kevitsa Mine

In Finland, Boliden Kevitsa, a multi-metal open-pit mine, is taking advantage of Edzcom and Nokia’s private wireless solutions to support its operations. The phased deployment of a 4.9G/LTE network has delivered seamless coverage across the 14-square-mile site, ensuring connectivity for vehicles, equipment, and employees even in extreme conditions of -26°C (-15°F).

The private network in Kevitsa is tailored to support both current and future applications, from mission-critical communication to advanced safety systems. With the network's geo-redundant core and full indoor-outdoor integration, every corner of the site is connected, laying a foundation for continuous digital transformation.
