TELUS Brings Private 5G to Calgary International Airport

Calgary International Airport is set to become the first airport in Canada to run on a full private 5G network, following a long term partnership between TELUS and the Calgary Airport Authority. The 10-year partnership aims to create a high performance wireless foundation that supports the airport’s growth and its wider digital transformation plans.

Private 5G is being introduced to complement and go beyond what fixed connections and Wi-Fi can deliver. Airports increasingly rely on connected devices, automated systems and real time operational data, which require more consistent and resilient connectivity. TELUS’ private wireless deployment will extend across the airport campus, covering both indoor and outdoor areas, and is expected to provide enterprise grade performance for all airport users.

The rollout will take place in phases, with the first stage planned for May 2025. TELUS has not disclosed details about the network suppliers or integration partners, but the operator positions this project as a natural step given its existing experience in private 5G deployments. For the Calgary Airport Authority, the move supports ambitions to handle future demand more efficiently while improving the overall passenger experience.

This deployment positions YYC as an early adopter of private wireless in the aviation sector and is likely to serve as a reference point for other Canadian airports exploring digital infrastructure upgrades.
