PortComms is an annual conference focused on the deployment and management of wireless networks in port environments. It brings together port operators, technology providers, and industry experts to discuss and explore the latest advancements in port connectivity and how wireless technologies, especially private 5G networks, are transforming operations. The event emphasizes innovations like automation, digitalization, and IoT integration, all of which are essential to improving port efficiency, safety, and data-driven decision-making.
PortComms 2024 was held in London on October 9th and 10th, bringing together leading port operators and industry professionals to explore the latest innovations in wireless connectivity. The event focused on how these advancements are revolutionizing port operations, enhancing efficiency, and driving digital transformation.
Tom White, Innovation and Net Zero Director at Thames Freeport shared their 5G Innovation Programme. Thames Freeport, with the support of seed funding from the UK Government, is initially investing approximately £3 million in private 5G coverage at three sites:
- DP World, London Gateway
- Forth Ports, Port of Tilbury
- Ford Motor Company, Dagenham
This programme is working collaboratively across the three private sector sites and the three public authorities representing the freeport to identify opportunities to deliver both private and public sector benefits.
The Freeport and partners are currently in the final procurement phase for the provider of the 5G network infrastructure, expecting to be deploying in Q1 2025.
This initial investment will open up new applications of 5G technologies in themes including safety and security, autonomous operations, advanced manufacturing, connected supply chains and decarbonisation.
Following the deployment of the network, the Freeport will be launching a multi-year 5G Innovation Programme in collaboration with global partners.
The programme will engage with best-in-class, deployable and scalable solutions that meet the needs of:
- Local businesses
- Local people and communities
- Future businesses at the Freeport sites
The Thames Freeport 5G Innovation Programme will run individual and shared challenge themes across the 5G sites. Partners at the 5G sites will benefit from new capabilities and new options to deliver services and operations more efficiently, greener and more effectively.
The programme will offer support to local innovators in accessing new market opportunities, and global innovators in localising their solutions to the UK market.
The first iteration of this programme will launch in Q2 2025.
