Private 5G Solution with Starlink Backhaul in Japanese Dam Construction

In October 2023, Hazama Ando Construction and the University of Tokyo conducted a demonstration test at a dam construction site in a mountainous region. They utilized a local 5G network (known as Private 5G in Japan) and the Starlink satellite internet network to efficiently manage construction and ensure safety on-site. This setup facilitated communication with construction personnel and allowed for remote monitoring of the site.

Hazama Ando has set out its "DX Vision 2030," with three main goals through digital transformation (DX):

  • Creating new ways of working that accommodate each individual’s lifestyle, eliminating the need for employees to relocate away from family or work overtime.
  • Expanding opportunities for skill acquisition and career development, enabling employees to increase job options and quickly gain new skills through digital technologies.
  • Fostering growth by launching new businesses that leverage the construction industry’s experience and expertise.

Dam construction sites in mountainous areas often have poor communication networks, which hinders the implementation of DX initiatives. In this demonstration, Hazama Ando successfully established a robust communication infrastructure by combining local 5G, which provides high-quality wireless coverage where needed, with internet access via low-orbit satellite. This technology enables reliable communication between construction workers, remote monitoring using high-definition cameras, and the overall management of on-site conditions.
